In this latest “Listener Question of the Week” episode, James and Phoebe address how you can separate yourself in a crowded, noisy and saturated marketplace.
James says that the biggest mistake that we can make is not following our dreams and not stepping into our commitment to serve others simply because someone else is already doing what we want to do.
He challenges the whole idea of what it means to have a competitor, and in fact one of his good friends also offered his own YouTube course. However, since becoming friends, they’ve collaborated and partnered on a successful program together.
“I live in world where there are no competitors”
Remember that there is no other person out there that’s exactly like you and understanding that is the first step in standing out in the marketplace.
“You are so unique that no one can compete on that level”
Phoebe adds that the people you attract will want to hear from you. You might not necessarily have all the answers, but it’s up to them to pull out the messages that they need at that time.
“Once you start to hone your message and your vision, you’re going to attract those right people; set yourself apart just by being you.”
James shares one exercise where you can start listing out the things that make you unique. What is it that your friends and family love about you?
“When you lead your marketing with your story, your life (and) what makes you weird, that immediately is going to have you stand out”
You can then look for other ways to start separating yourself. To do this, know that people are craving two things: more time, and more connection with others. When you start with these two things, you can begin to deliver value in a unique and different way.
Being a great listener is an important part of marketing. What are people complaining about, and how can you help? It will take a healthy obsession on your part to find out who your customer really is.
Phoebe recommends that you look at Facebook groups to see what people are asking for and what they need. You can then ask yourself how to do things a little bit better than everyone else.
“You’re there to help other people and to serve them. Knowing how you can serve them best is just going to help you create an amazing community.”
