Our thoughts on a question asked by a reader in the Singapore newspaper called The Straits Times:
I am 17 and I have been on a ketogenic (low-carb high- fat) diet for a week. The results have been great so far. I've been losing weight steadily and this has been very encouraging.
However, I've heard that people gained 10kg more than their starting weight when they quit the diet. And even though they did not overeat, they were unable to shed the extra kilograms.
Do you think it is possible to stay on the keto diet and still eat carbs, though not as much as before, without gaining weight?

1. Can a ketogenic diet help someone with psoriatic arthritis?

I have a niece who was recently diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and I was wondering if The Doc has any experience with patients who have this condition and whether or not the ketogenic diet would help.

2. Can a ketogenic approach help lower body fat percentage for someone who is normal weight?

I've got a question about using a keto diet to help someone lower their body fat percentage when they're already in the normal weight range. You guys often talk about keto diets in the context of someone who is currently overweight, obese, or suffering from disease. But what about those of us who simply want to achieve a leaner physique? Is the fat loss slower and does it require lower intake of food, extra exercise, or something else?
I am very curious how a ketogenic diet could help me achieve my fat loss goals. I'm a 5’2” female weightlifter, 135 pounds, and a body fat percentage of 29%. I have been doing a strict ketogenic diet for the past month, so I’m anxious to hear your answer to my questions.
3. Is there any benefit to adding back in workout supplements to my exercise while eating keto?

I love the show and listen to each episode at least twice. There’s so much good information in them all. I have been following keto diet for the past three months and seeing great results so far. Even though all the meatheads in the gym have preached eating carbs to me for years, I am able to gain muscle and get leaner at the same time while in ketosis—and I’ve never felt better.
For years, gym rats have loaded our bodies with supplements that we take pre-workout, during workout, and post-workout. When starting keto, I quit using all supplements because I was unsure how they would impact me. Now, I have coffee with coconut oil and butter along with an egg yolk as a pre-workout snack and feel amazing in the gym. It makes me question the hundreds of dollars I have spent on pre-workout powders.
My question is this: Would there be any benefit to adding back in some creatine pre-workout or any other supplement to enhance my workouts or is a ketogenic diet alone sufficient for seeing the results I desire? The Internet is full of so much contradictory information about this that I’m just confused about what to do. I am excited to hear your thoughts about this and I appreciate all the work you two are doing.

- What could be causing a burning sensation in my body when my blood glucose goes higher during keto?
Hi Jimmy and The Doc,
I love your podcast because you guys do such a great job. Keep it up! I have been eating keto for about a year. During the first six months, I felt great, lost body fat, and built a lot of muscle. But I started getting a burning sensation that would begin in my legs and then spread throughout my body. I have been measuring when this feeling comes on and when my blood glucose is in the 80s to low 90s, the symptoms are much less severe. I consume spinach with lots of butter, ground beef, eggs, and salami to get those blood sugar readings.
However, when my blood glucose is in the 100-120 range, the burning sensation is much worse. What makes my blood sugar reach this level is a cup of eggplant and zucchini. I’m not sure what could be causing this and I live in an area where ketone testing equipment is not available. Could there be a relationship between the higher blood sugar readings and this burning sensation?
