Are you a protein shake junkie? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Protein shakes and drinks are all the rage, but too much of a good thing is not always a good thing. A new study out of the University of Sydney looked at the effects of too much protein and found that it could actually shorten your life. Keep in mind that the average adult needs between 50-60 grams of protein spread out over a day. That’s combined protein from all sources. Many protein bars and shakes on the market contain close to that. What happens to all that excess protein? Well, it could be making you fat and or depressed. My advice to you is to limit your protein shakes or bars to no more than three a week and use them as meal replacements and never as just a snack.
