THE STORY
It was a grey November evening when I received e Facebook message saying: I am a Kyrgyz from Pakistan. It was Abdul Rakhim Hudayar. I knew there are some Kyrgyz in that country and said hello to him. Literarily the next day he sent me a new message where he wrote that thanks to me he "found his mother"! Somehow I, or rather my film, Letters from the Pamirs, played a role in discovering Abdul's mother, after 50 years! And his story inspired me so much that I decided to start a podcast! So it is my first podcast which is all about the untold stories from Central Asia and beyond.
I filmed Abdul on Skype, so there will be also a short video of the interview on my Youtube channel. Simply search for the channel under my name Janyl Jusupjan. You will find some pictures from Abdul's childhood on www.janyljusupjan.com, where you can subscribe to my emails concerning new podcasts.
There is more to it! There is the story written by Abdul himself, especially for my podcast, available for you. To receive it, send an email to me at janyl_j@hotmail.com. This short text of Abdul’s is about his grandfather's dramatic departure, almost 100 years ago, from what is now Uzbekistan, which was, at those times under the reign of Tsarist Russia. I tell you, he writes so vividly!
Enjoy the story!
Why this podcast
For over twenty years I worked for an international radio station's Kyrgyz Department, and Radio is what I know best and love!
A few years ago, I decided to leave this corporate work and start a new career, as an independent filmmaker and author. I love my new work – new profession if you like, especially since my first French-Kyrgyz feature documentary film Letters from the Pamirs was received well - it was programmed at film festivals in France and the Czech Republic, and received a Grand Prix in my native country, which is Kyrgyzstan. Yes, one of those glorious, new STANS!
But I realize now, after spending three years to make my first feature film, that I need to be in touch with my audience more frequently! Simply put, I am wired for more connections than every 3 or 5-6 years, which is on average how long it takes to make a proper film. Writing a book is also a long and lonely process.
That is how I decided to start this podcast from my studio in Annecy. I write on my podcast page why it is called Chai Latte and Salt. If you are interested, go to janyljusupjan.com, and click on the Podcast Chai Latte and Salt. My site is also brand new and has very little information, but this podcast is there, and a couple more are coming soon, so please bear with me!
GET IN TOUCH with me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram! It is always Janyl Jusupjan. The full video interview and similar exclusive content will be available for Patreon supporters. I just need to find out how to make them available for you – FUTURE PATRONS on Patreon.com!
And, if you know someone who might be interested to hear Abdul's story, please share it. As you know, amazing stories need to be shared.
The next podcast show will be with Sashar Zarif, a Canadian-Iranian dancer, and educator with Azerbaijani background. Stay tuned!
