Every small business employee has a unique hierarchy of competencies that can be the main contributors to their success. Training to these competencies is essential to helping them reach company goals, according to leadership consultant Tom Borg. “So often in an organization, training or development is like a one-and-done type event and that's not how it should be,” he says. “A smart company will have an ongoing strategy in place that's part of that person's performance appraisal process, where they're giving them goals and objectives. And that means getting the support they need, whether it be additional equipment, software, training or development.”
