Racism as it relates to business can be an intimidating subject to dive into.
Historically we’ve heard “It’s too political”. However I want to challenge that perspective.
Addressing racism, or any type of power and privilege dynamic (homophobia, sexism, ableism, poverty, etc), is actually about human rights, not politics. Speaking on these issues is simply you standing up and using your voice and influence for something you believe in.
Don’t confuse standing up for human rights as being ‘too political’.
Not only is this a wrong way to approach your business, it also leads to you diminishing your voice in other ways. When we feel certain topics are taboo or not appropriate for business, what we do is fall in line with this status quo notion that there is a ‘right’ and a ‘wrong’.
The goal though, should be to bring your full self into your business. That includes causes and issues that are important to you.
I know there is this large fear around being called out. However, be open to the idea that you are going to make a mistake and therefore you will be corrected, and from there you can learn and pivot. Just like you’re open to knowing you’re going to make other business mistakes as well.
Being scared of what people will think of you when you share your message is actually the thing that’s problematic. We need to give up this idea of perfectionism. Be bold and brave.
Just like everything we talk about here around business, expect to make mistakes and have compassion for yourself when you do.
If you wait to get it right, you will be waiting forever.
What are you passionate about? What are you eager to advocate for?
Your voice has meaning and power, use it to help create the world you desire.
On this episode, I cover:
