What we’re talking about:
Today I’m chatting with Jack about the Bachelor of Property and Real Estate and Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin. He talks about his experience with the Morrisby and seeking career advice outside of what was available at school, VCE as a competition, and choosing a course by looking ahead to what you want from your career.
His experience with career planning as a studentJack did the Morrisby in Year 10 and was told he was suited to a career in finance or investing, which was an area he had already considered. This helped him choose his VCE subjects to continue exploring this path. Later when he wanted more specific advice, he saw an independent career advisor who looked more into his interests and found the Property and Real Estate course for him.
VCE as a competitionWe discuss the idea of how artificial the VCE is in comparison to real life, and how the competitive nature of it makes it particularly stressful for students who might not be getting the results they would like.
Choosing a course based on how you want your career to lookJack recognised that while he was interested in commerce, he felt he was more suited to a career that would allow him to get out of the office as well. This led to him finding the course he’s now doing instead of settling for a more general commerce degree.
