What we’re talking about:

Today I’m chatting with India, who completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Politics followed by the Juris Doctor (postgraduate Law) at the University of Melbourne. India talks about her love of learning, her desire from an early age to be able to have more of a say in what she’d be studying and how she found that in her Arts degree. We also discuss the problems with comparison in VCE, and her experiences in studying Law and beginning her career in a corporate law firm.

Following a love of learning

A theme that follows throughout the discussion is the idea that learning and being able to explore and choose her own direction within broader courses is something that India always knew she wanted to do. Even though she knew quite early on that she probably wanted to study law, the opportunity to explore a range of subjects within an Arts degree really appealed to her. Her Arts degree made it really easy for her to go on exchange for a semester in Washington DC during an election year, which was a dream come true for India given her interest in Politics.

Know yourself and don’t compare yourself to others

India talks about how she often fell into the trap of looking at how much study everyone else was doing during VCE and wondering if she was doing enough. When she instead focused on what she knew worked for her, like taking mental breaks, casual work, getting at least 8 hours of sleep, etc she felt much better and was more successful at school.

Pursuing Law

India explains the process of applying for the JD, including completing as undergraduate degree and then the LSATs. She also talks us through the course and what you study, and then her experience of her graduate year working in a large corporate law firm so far.
