— When considering what makes people change in therapy we often focus on things like: how willing a client is to change, the relational fit between therapist and client as well as the efficacy of therapeutic interventions. But what about self-compassion? This doesn’t seem to get top billing when thinking about how change happens.
In order to seek healing, you need to be able to value yourself and see yourself as worthy of healing. We cannot heal what we don’t love or feel care for. Cultivating self-compassion brings love, care and cooperation into your system instead of division and intolerance. And when you can entertain the idea that you might not be inherently wrong or bad, you have taken a significant step in healing.
