Malaysia’s ban on poultry exports to Singapore beginning June 1 has set the industry across the region aflutter while Malaysian producers have gone into a tailspin. Malaysia supplies up to one-third of Singapore’s requirements. Singapore authorities swung into action to ensure no lapse in supply, addressing potential imports of chilled chicken from Thailand, and Australia, as well as frozen chicken from the US and Brazil. At the same time, the Singapore Food Authority also encouraged consumers to switch to other sources of proteins and to buy only what they need. But what’s more telling is the opportunity this has raised with other potential supply sources in the region.
