How drugs like Ozempic affect your metabolism and your muscle mass. Ozempic and Wegovy are brand names for the medication semaglutide, used to treat type 2 diabetes and belong to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. Semaglutide stimulates the release of insulin, slows down food digestion, and can help curb appetite, causing a person to eat less and lose weight. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal disorders, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation. People with a history of thyroid issues or pancreatic cancer should avoid it. Ozempic and similar drugs have been scrutinized in phase 3 programs and cardiovascular outcomes trials due to a potential increased risk of pancreatic and thyroid cancer. Ozempic is available by prescription only, and the cost ranges from $925-$1080 per month. Experts are concerned about the potential risk of eating disorders and the drug shortage due to its popularity. Drinking alcohol while taking Ozempic, and it is important to talk to a medical provider before considering alcohol use. Studies have shown sustained weight loss benefits with Ozempic, resulting in greater reductions in waist circumference, BMI, blood pressure, and improved levels of glycated hemoglobin, fasting plasma glucose, C-reactive protein, and fasting lipid levels after 68 weeks. One year after withdrawal of once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2.4 mg and lifestyle intervention, participants regained two-thirds of their prior weight loss.
