on the national stage is 0:13 been nothing short 0:14 meteoric he was the first Hispanic Solicitor General of the State of Texas 0:19 at the time of his appointment to that post in 2003 0:22 he was the youngest solicitor general in the United States 0:25 he's argued nearly a dozen cases before the US Supreme Court 0:29 and written more than 50 supreme court briefs the son of a Cuban immigrant who 0:34 became a Baptist pastor 0:36 Cruz became a favorite of the Tea Party movement and in 2012 defeated the Texas 0:41 lieutenant governor 0:42 to win the republican party's nomination for the US Senate 0:46 he won the general election with more than fifty six percent of the vote 0:51 I'm it would take cruises apartment just west of downtown houston 0:54 an apartment with panoramic view of the city that he shares with his wife Heidi 0:59 and two daughters I began by asking him 1:02 how he originally became interested in politics 1:05 I get very involved in a group in his chin nonprofit that was called 1:10 the free enterprise instead and what they did is they took high school 1:13 students and they had us 1:15 study free-market economics so we would read milt freedman 1:19 hi meese's Ostia and we would right 1:23 a twenty minute never a speech free-market economics 1:27 and then we would to roll around the state speaking about free market 1:31 economics and this is as a 1:33 as a kid is you know 13 14 15 years old 1:36 the group then formed a spinoff 1:39 it was called constitutional cromer's 1:42 and it was five high school students we spent hundreds of hours 1:46 studying the Constitution and we 1:49 never sized shorten the monikers Ste 1:53 and then went to a Texas and we go speak said we're big brodry 1:56 lover wanna Skloot and will you be sitting there having lunch 2:00 I get a five high school students with set-up piece 2:03 we would right from there the entire US Coast 2:08 shorten the money he still be there 2:12 I can't do it all up but I can tell you for example 2:16 ATC CNC CPCC on mama yes 2:21 wanna first exactly what on earth is that that his article 1 section 8 of the 2:25 Constitution 2:26 taxes credit commerce naturalization cordage counterfeiting 2:30 post office copyright courts piracy army Warnie 2:34 militia money for which Washington DC 2:38 rules necessary and proper those resident enumerated powers 2:43 copters if it's not on that list the constitution doesn't give it to Congress 2:48 to because Ted Cruz burst onto the national scene is such a young age 2:53 he also had a young and growing family I asked him if that fact if his life made 2:58 a difference in his decision to run for high office 3:01 I also asked him how it's paid informs us thinking now 3:06 tell you the single hardest part running for office is the impact on the fam 3:09 you know heidi and I've got two little girls got a four-year-old 3:13 one when I walk out her home in the morning and Caroline our oldest daughter 3:20 wraps her arms around my way its says don't go to the breaks your heart 3:25 and and I spend a lot of time on the road away from 3:30 shy away from and that's really tough but I'll tell you at the same time that 3:35 that's why I am doing I don't wanna love my daughter's 3:40 twenty years and tell them they've inherited a country that's gone bankrupt 3:46 that we lost the freest the most prosperous 3:50 nation in the history of the world and then I could have done something to help 3:55 save 3:56 and I did and I stayed home I 4:00 didn't enter the fray I didn't enter the arena because I wasn't willing to 4:04 sacrifice while 4:05 to get I don't want to have that conversation with my daughters 4:09 I was raised in the church and and I 4:12 came to Christ when I was 8 and you know being a Christian having a up 4:18 personal relationship with Jesus Christ say 4:21 use it's an integral part of life you know I'll tell you something though or 4:27 not I think that running for public office 4:30 puts a particular 4:34 obligation K to be very careful with how you talk about 4:38 because I think far too many candidates 4:42 where their faith and there's and and they stand up and say 4:47 got told me to run and I'll tell you my views a voter whenever I hear some 4:52 politicians say that 4:53 is that's great one got tells me to vote for you will be on the same page 4:56 Ted Cruz has criticized the republican party for being 5:01 tone-deaf in his outreach to Hispanics I asked him what the republican party 5:06 should be doing 5:07 differently but Hispanics or a profoundly conservative cool 5:14 the values that Hispanic community are republican values 5:18 if you look at the values that resonate most profoundly 5:21 Hispanic community their faith family 5:24 patriotism and hard work the prophets republicans 5:29 this is not our values and not our policies 5:33 it's that many Republican candidates don't communicate to the Hispanic 5:37 community in a way 5:38 that that conveys respect understand 5:42 he is a problem with the messengers and how they communicate the value is rather 5:47 than the values themselves 5:49 one of the more fascinating aspects of the career 5:53 Ted Cruz is this experience before the Supreme Court 5:56 I asked him if he was nervous the first time he appeared before the court 6:00 in 2003 when he was still in his early 30s 6:03 was 32 and I spent a great deal it unprepared 6:08 hundreds and hundreds of hours pored over the case love poured over the 6:12 record 6:12 did four minutes in and I actually was convinced I said you know you ready for 6:17 this 6:18 and I was convinced I wasn't nervous and then the night before I lay down in bed 6:23 to go to sleep 6:24 I didn't sleep a wink I stared at the ceiling the entire night and I remember 6:29 laughing to myself going well 6:32 maybe you're not quite as commish think York I will tell you that there is no 6:36 experience as a lawyer 6:39 like arguing in front of the US Supreme Court I mean it is 6:42 invigorating it is electrifying 6:46 so I out a an anecdote about the court 6:49 what I'm wearing down are my argument says 6:52 these particular bids I born in just about every oral argument ideas 6:56 solicitor general a Texas litigators are superstitious bunch 7:00 and I were these boots for just about every argument 7:04 except I am embarrassed and ashamed to say 7:08 in front of the US Supreme Court and the reason is my former boss chief justice 7:12 rehnquist 7:14 was a stickler for a tire 7:17 he had more than once begun an argument 7:21 by admonishing Council leaning forward saying 7:24 are Council that color suit you're wearing 7:29 is inappropriate for argument at this court 7:33 he did not think Brown was an appropriate color for anyone to wear it 7:36 in our 7:37 and and I was very close to the chief justice but but there was a non-zero 7:42 chance that if I were these boots 7:44 the argument wouldn't begin with talking about the case it would begin with the 7:47 Chief Justice 7:49 advising me this footwear was not appropriate the Supreme Court 7:52 if so so much to my my deep should grant in Shane 7:57 what I argue that the court I went and pulled out of the dust in my closet wing 8:01 tips and put them on 8:02 and went to do the arc now when I was about halfway through my 10 years SG 8:08 chief justice rehnquist past and John Roberts became the new jean-juste 8:12 in and I've known John Roberts many many years on he was also a rehnquist clerk 8:17 and so he and I were friends for 8:19 for over a decade before he became chief just 8:23 and so I saw him shortly there afterwards and I guess I was feeling a 8:27 little 8:27 cheeky because I asked him ice I said you know 8:32 tell me chief do you have any views 8:36 on the appropriateness boots as footwear at oral argument 8:41 and and John Roberts laughed any said Ted 8:45 if you representing the state of Texas they're not only appropriate they are 8:49 required 8:51 it so ever since then I have worn my argument boots at the court 8:54 but it took a special dispensation for the Chief Justice for me to screw up the 8:58 courage to do so 8:59 but that spirit well that's a great story well 9:02 other than the advice for a Texas 9:06 Solicitor General to make sure he has his argument boots on 9:09 what other advice would you have for young people 9:13 you know I'd say couple things I'd say number one follow your passions 9:18 life is too short to spend it doing things you despise that you don't love 9:25 you know I would say ask yourself when you wake up in the morning 9:28 what do you think it up when you go to bed at night what are you thinking about 9:32 what are your passion 9:34 what makes you feel alive I think God gives us passions and as a direction 9:39 that he wants us to go and and follow your heart 9:42 you will be happier and you'll do a better job if you love what you're doing 9:47 and wanted the real blessings have growing up in the home I did 9:51 with a father that as a teenager had been imprisoned and tortured at nearly 9:55 killed 9:58 issue understood from a very young age 10:01 that having principal men and women in office 10:04 is how you protect yourself tyranny 10:08 that's what the stakes you know President Reagan famously described 10:13 america is a shining city on a hill 8 10:16 beacon of hope and freedom for the world that that is our legacy 10:21 in our legacy is in jeopardy right now and and I hope to play a part 10:26 standing shoulder to shoulder with Patriots across texas 10:29 and across the country and fighting to restore our nation 10:33 Ted Cruz was sworn in as United States Senator in January of 2013 10:39 in a show of confidence from his colleagues he was appointed vice 10:43 chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee 10:46 that's a group of the Senate's most conservative members 10:50 and it means that even as a freshman Ted Cruz is likely to have a significant 10:54 voice on the national stage 10:56 one that will likely be hearing from for years to come 11:00 reporting for World News Group new Christian voices series 11:04 I'm Warren Smith 11:21
