Ouch! You just slammed your finger in the door. How do you know if it’s broken or jammed? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. Jammed fingers are usually caused by sports injuries, but they can also be caused by falling on your hand or slamming it in door. These injuries can cause swelling in the joints of the finger, pain, and redness. If your finger is broken, then you may be able to see the bone either sticking out or just deformed under the skin. If broken, you will have little to no movement in your finger. However, if it is jammed, you should still have function in the finger. If your finger appears crooked, becomes numb or pale, or if you develop a fever, seek immediate medical attention.
