The last two months have been the most painful of my life. On August 15, 2018, I lost my 14 year old son Andy Larson in a car accident. I was driving slowly in the exit lane with my wife and two sons to the local minor league baseball team's game in our van when we were struck from behind by a sedan traveling at a high speed. My son, Andy, was killed instantly when he sustained a fractured neck. We do not (as of the writing of this post) have an accident report or police report so the exact details of how the other driver was distracted or her speed. Nor do we know what criminal penalties the other driver will be subjected to for the death of our son. For now, we have been dealing with the hollowness in our home and family without Andy and trying to move on with life and work. Our discussion hopefully offers some insight into grief while being sincere with brief moments of humor. What to expect, what is comforting, what is not helpful, and how it has changed our lives. Specifically, we discuss the process of forgiveness, grace, and practical things you can do to help your family members or friends in dealing with the grief. My hope is that this episode will be a comfort or helpful for those in the grieving process or those helping a loved one go through the process. Dr. Marcy Larson is a private practice general pediatrician who is an assistant clinical professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and the mother of Andy Larson.
