The demand for coaching services for physicians seems to be growing daily. On one end of the spectrum, there’s life coaching. Then there’s health and fitness coaching. Physicians sometimes need career coaching. At the other end of the coaching spectrum is professional development coaching.
Dr. Ryan Bayley is board certified in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services, and holds an adjunct faculty position at the Duke University School of Medicine.
He obtained his undergraduate degree at Harvard University and his medical degree at Vanderbilt University. He completed his residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia and Cornell). He's a Certified Professional Coach and has been providing professional development coaching for physicians and executives since 2013.
Ryan describes the role that burnout played in his journey from paramedic, to emergency physician and EMS expert, to professional coach.
In speaking with him, I was reminded that some physicians are required by state medical boards to seek coaching for alleged behavioral issues. It must be a difficult assignment for a physician coach.
Ryan does a wide range of coaching for both physicians and non-physicians. I was pleased to find out that a significant percentage of physicians with burnout continue to practice medicine following Ryan's coaching.
Ryan addressed factors that slow our progress when seeking a new career. He also describes why you might want to consider a coaching career yourself.
