What is a MedSpa? Well, it’s just a contraction of the words Medical and Spa. A spa is defined as “a commercial establishment offering health and beauty treatments through such means as steam baths, exercise equipment, and massage.” On the other hand, a medical spa is a hybrid of a typical spa and a medical clinic.
As such, a medspa provides medical treatments, such as Botox injections, microdermabrasion, laser treatments and even liposuction, and requires physician involvement and oversight.
Working in a medspa is one of the few careers that enables a physician to leave behind the frustrations of onerous government regulations, extensive call, and dealing with preauthorizations and insurance billing, while still providing care to grateful patients. In other words, it’s a possible solution to burnout!
You can work as a medspa physician as an employee. Or, if your willing to take a little more risk, you can establish your own facility.
Today’s guest, Dr. Lisa Jenks, did just that 11 years ago. Lisa graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine in 1986. After residency training at Ohio State University, she began a career in emergency medicine.
For reasons we discuss during today’s interview, in 2007, Dr. Jenks opened Genesis MedSpa in Colorado Springs. Since it’s opening, Genesis has grown tremendously, moving from a 4-treatment room facility into a 10-room facility in 2012 and then adding an additional three treatment rooms in 2016. Under her direction, Genesis has won the BBB’s coveted ‘Excellence in Customer Service’ award three times, and has won numerous ‘Best Of’ awards.
In addition to providing great medspa services for her clients, while pursuing a career that she truly enjoys, Lisa has also served as a mentor for other physicians who want to start their own medspas.
She explains all of this during our conversation.
You can get a glimpse of what she has created by visiting her web site at genesis-medspa.com. And if you’re seriously considering developing your own medspa and would like to contact Lisa, you can send her an email at lisa@genesis-medspa.com. There’s also a phone number on the Contact Section of the web site.
