ACLU of Utah Legal Director John Mejia tells me about what implications an innovative new system used to detect guns and other weapons in public areas could have on Utah residents. Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes announced plans to test this new system in Utah. The technology consists of bouncing energy waves that allow a computer system to identify if people are carrying a concealed weapon. When they do, security officials are notified when the AI-powered system detects a potentially dangerous item, such as a gun or knife. Reyes says the technology could be useful at locations like the Sundance Film Festival, Utah Jazz basketball games, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Biannual General Conference, or public schools.
While it may be useful for security purposes, what rights or liberties are we giving up in return?
