Dr. Jason Ryan was practicing cardiology and teaching medical students at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He created educational videos to help his students pass their USMLE Step 1 board exams.
The students found the videos very helpful, and began sharing them with their classmates. Jason enjoyed creating the videos and students wanted more. So, about five years ago, he created and funded his business, Boards and Beyond, and built a web site where his educational videos could be hosted. He continued to build his library, hired additional help, and now has over 450 lessons covering all content areas of the USMLE Step 1 board exam.
His business continues to grow and add new services, all dedicated to helping medical students prepare for their boards. The visits and downloads have grown by word of mouth. There are now thousands of visitors to the site each week.
The costs to students have been kept very affordable, while producing a healthy financial return for Jason's business. For physicians looking to start a profitable online part-time business, this is an excellent model to emulate.
